When do kids actually need braces?

Less often, and later, than many parents fear. The American Association of Orthodontists recommends a first orthodontic evaluation by age 7, and at SmileWorks that evaluation is free. For most children the honest answer at that visit is "not yet" — we simply keep an eye on growth with periodic check-ins and tell you plainly if and when that changes.

For some children, though, an early check reveals a developing problem worth addressing while they are still growing. Early checks let us time treatment well and sometimes avoid bigger problems later — which is exactly why the age-7 evaluation exists. Early (interceptive) orthodontics, explained calmly

Early interceptive treatment — sometimes called two-phase treatment — means addressing a developing orthodontic problem during childhood rather than waiting for every adult tooth to arrive. Life with braces: a parent's short guide

Food. The list to avoid is shorter than you'd think: hard, sticky, and chewy foods — ice, hard candy, caramel, gum, popcorn kernels, and whole raw carrots or apples (cut them up instead). Everything else is fair game.

Comfort. Expect a few days of pressure after placement and after adjustments, usually managed easily with soft foods and over-the-counter pain relief. Modern braces are far more comfortable than the ones parents remember.
