A great first dental experience shapes how a child feels about the dentist forever. Here's exactly what to expect at SmileWorks — no surprises, no pressure.
What happens at the first appointment
1. A warm welcome. Our team greets your child by name and gives them a moment to explore. The vibe is closer to a playroom than a clinic — on purpose.
2. A gentle look around. We count teeth, check gums and bite, and take X-rays only when they're genuinely needed. For toddlers, this often happens in a parent's lap.
3. A cleaning that fits their age. From a soft toothbrush "tickle" for the littlest patients to a full polish for older kids.
4. A real conversation. The doctor walks you through what we found, what's developing, and what (if anything) to keep an eye on — including whether an orthodontic evaluation makes sense down the road.

Insurance, membership & payment
We work with most major dental insurance plans and will verify your benefits before your visit. No insurance? Our membership plans start at $324/year and include cleanings, exams, fluoride, and X-rays, plus 20% off other treatment. Financing is available for larger treatment plans.
First-visit questions
What should I bring to my child's first appointment?
Your ID, insurance card (if applicable), a list of any medications your child takes, and completed new-patient forms if you'd like a head start. Most importantly — bring a relaxed attitude; kids take their cues from you.
Can I stay with my child during the visit?
Yes. Parents are welcome chairside at SmileWorks. Seeing you calm and involved helps children feel safe, and it lets you see exactly how we care for them.
How long does a first visit take?
Plan for about 45–60 minutes. That covers a gentle exam, a cleaning appropriate to your child's age, any needed X-rays, and time for the doctor to answer every question you have.
What if my child is nervous or has had a bad dental experience?
Tell us when you book — it changes how we run the visit. We use tell-show-do techniques, go at your child's pace, and can discuss comfort options including sedation for children who need extra support.
