Zirconia crowns for kids: full coverage without the silver look

Why families choose zirconia
The most obvious advantage is appearance. Zirconia is white and can blend more naturally with neighboring teeth than a stainless steel crown.

When zirconia may be considered
They may be used for selected primary front or back teeth with extensive decay, fractures, developmental defects, or after pulp treatment when full coverage is indicated. Front teeth, where a silver crown would show in every smile, are the most common reason families ask.
How zirconia differs from stainless steel
Prefabricated zirconia crowns are rigid and cannot be crimped or adapted in the same way as stainless steel. That means the tooth preparation and fit requirements differ: a little more tooth structure is removed so the crown seats passively, and the tooth has to stay dry while the cement sets.

What the appointment is like
The damaged tooth is prepared to create room for the crown. The pediatric dentist selects an appropriate crown size, verifies fit and bite, and cements it in place. Behavior guidance or sedation may be discussed depending on the child and procedure, and everything happens in one visit.
How to care for a zirconia crown
Brush normally around the crown and gumline, floss where appropriate, and keep regular preventive appointments. Contact us if the crown becomes loose, the gum remains persistently swollen, or the child develops new pain.

Are zirconia crowns completely metal-free?
Yes. NuSmile zirconia crowns are ceramic, with no metal, which also makes them an option for children with a known metal sensitivity.
Do white crowns last until the baby tooth falls out?
The goal is for the crown to remain functional until natural exfoliation, although any restoration can occasionally loosen or fail.
Is zirconia always better than stainless steel?
No. Each material has advantages. Tooth location, remaining structure, moisture control, cooperation, esthetic goals, and cost can influence the recommendation.
Can zirconia crowns be used after a pulpotomy?
They may be an option for selected teeth after pulp treatment when the clinical conditions allow predictable full coverage.
Will the white crown match my child's other teeth?
Zirconia crowns come in tooth-colored shades and blend well with most children's teeth. They are prefabricated, so the match is close rather than custom-tinted.
